Al Horne, President of SABC

Al J. Horne, the founding President of SABC. A native of Port Elizabeth. B.A. and M.A. from Abilene Christian University. Post graduate study in Semitics, University of South Africa. Doctoral studies at University of Witwatersrand. Married Donna Whitaker of Houston, Texas. They served as missionaries in Tanzania 1959-1964. Since 1965, preacher for the Benoni Church of Christ, and since 1975, has served as one of the elders. He lectures in Biblical Languages, Old and New Testament, and religious education at SABC. His wife, Donna, is a lecturer for SABC's ladies and serves as the school publicity secretary. Their four children were educated at SABC.

Strong sea breezes often swept across beaches and suburbs of the city where I first saw the light of day. It boasted the reputation of being "The Friendly City". Perhaps that is why my birthplace, Port Elizabeth, South Africa, was selected as a logical place to plant the Lord's church in the middle fifties. When I was baptized in Zululand by the then young and dapper Eldred Echols, I never dreamed that one day every major metropolitan area would have a congregation of the Lord's church. I never dreamed that we would be training candidates for ministry right here in this subcontinent of Africa. Little did I know that God would actually grant me a part in that development.

After a Christian college education in America, I returned to my beloved Africa with a Biblical degree under my belt and a sweet, dedicated wife on my arm. We served our apprenticeship in third world Tanganyika (Tanzania now). The African people taught us much about sharing the gospel with this dark and benighted land. We sat where they sat. We saw their situation and pitied their plight. Poverty, ignorance and disease kept the people in bondage. We soon learned that we must multiply our effort in order to hasten the pace in setting them free. The solution to that problem was to train locals here at home. To send disciples abroad was simply consigning them to other homes where they would remain. They unwittingly betrayed their trust. We lost some of our best candidates.

Though the solution escaped us at first, it was apparent all the time in 2 Timothy 2:2. "Commit the message to faithful men who could teach others also". So an idea conceived in the crucible of inexperience gave rise to what we now know as "Bible Schools or Bible Colleges". Southern Africa Bible College was the fruit of many years of grappling with the problem of reaching the lost more effectively and with the least amount of time loss. In 1967, the idea became reality and today SABC graduates dot this land and other countries in Africa with the message of life. Even America, Australia, Canada, England and New Zealand among others are served by men whose mission was shaped here in South Africa.

The college is situated in Benoni, South Africa. The winds of change have swept away the old political cobwebs. We have greater freedom now to preach the unfettered gospel than ever before. God has set before us a door of opportunity that no one can shut. Come see for yourself. Help us to help them. Help us to defeat the forces of evil and confusion. Help us to bring Christ to Africa using Africa's own sons and daughters. Help us to promote the sound teaching of the Holy Bible to rescue people who wallow in ignorance.

"Benoni" means "Son of my Sorrow". Sea breezes do not sing through the trees here. Mine dumps litter the area. They disclose a once industrious and prosperous past. "Sorrow" has intruded on many lives, but the "Son of God" can transform this city into a "Place of Rejoicing". A place where seekers can find the Lord of Life and where they can share his Love with the Lost. Southern Africa Bible College is here to serve the interests of Jesus Christ and Him crucified. I see my role as His willing and obedient slave. We would welcome you here to study or to participate with us in the mammoth task before us. If we are indifferent to the cries of the lost, then their last chance has been squandered. We can't afford to let that happen. Christ is in us the hope of glory! Welcome to SABC. Enjoy the spiritual adventure with us.

Love you all,
Al --"the Horne of Africa"
