Lectureship 2000 Wrap-up

During the last week of September, SABC held its 34th consecutive annual Lectureship. The theme was "Amazing Grace" and for the first time, an Australian preacher was selected as the keynote speaker. Ian Coker of Toowoomba proved to be an excellent choice. Dr. Hillery Motsinger of prison ministry fame also made a significant contribution to the Lectureship. He is from Dallas, Texas. Another two who featured on the programme were Stuart and Celia Jones of Lubbock, Texas, who had arrived mid-August to teach at SABC for a two-month period. Stuart specializes in Science and the Bible. Attendance this year was good considering that the price of petrol has gone up approximately 25% since the beginning of the year. That prevented some coming from far places, but nevertheless, folks traveled from Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and from all over South Africa to be present. On Sunday night, 542 gathered for the evening service!

Coming and Going

Director Al Horne and his wife, Donna, left October 6 for America. Al will fund-raise for SABC with plans to return to South Africa early in January in time for the new school year. He will headquarter in Kerrville, Texas, where Donna will be caring for her aged parents. Also returning to Africa in January will be Jerry Hogg of Knoxville, Tennessee. Long-time missionary to South Africa and former SABC lecturer, Jerry will spend the first six months of 2001 teaching at SABC.

Meeting our Students

  • DAWID LOUW was born in Kimberley in 1953 and moved to Johannesburg with his parents in 1968. He was very active in various sporting activities playing midfield position in a social soccer team, school rugby, indoor cricket; he even boxed professionally in the light weight division which meant that he travelled and boxed all over South Africa between 1966-1983. Dawid still plays indoor cricket and indoor soccer. As a qualified motor mechanic he is able to work on diesel and petrol engines of both heavy and light duty vehicles, which includes motorcycles, lawnmowers and tractors. Dawid is also a qualified welder. These skills are proving to be a wonderful asset for SABS since he is always willing to repairs broken things. Dawid is married to Betty and they have 4 children, Andr‚, Melenie, Gashwell, MacDavid and they also have two grandchildren, Neville and MacShaline. Dawid was converted and baptized by Trevor Belears of the Church of Christ at Eden Park in 1987. After he became involved in the Prison Ministry with Louis Gerber, he worked with prisoners at Boksburg Prison, Johannesburg ("Sun City") Prison, Leeuwkop Prison, Pretoria Maximum Security Prison and Baviaanspoort ("Bobbejaanspoor"). Approximately 3 years ago Dawid accompanied Louis Gerber to Wolmaranstad to visit with an ex-prisoner from the Boksburg Prison who was starting a congregation there, and it was at this time that he met Chris Burke who was instrumental in encouraging Dawid to attend SABS. Dawid says the biggest thrill in his life is to be at SABS and to be involved in the ministry. Dawid and Betty intend to work in Wolmaranstad when they have completed their SABS' studies.

  • DANIEL SAMUEL HARDING (DAN) was born in Port Elizabeth in 1946 where he grew up and was educated. Dan attended P.E. Technical High School and Uitenhage
Technical College. After matriculation he obtained a National Teachers Diploma. Dan was converted and baptized by Andy Jooste in 1968 and in that same year he married Malinda. The couple continued to reside in Port Elizabeth, where Dan was employed by the Department of Education and lectured at P.E. Technical High School and Uitenhage Technical College in both the practice and the theory of technical subjects. Dan taught for 20 years until he was boarded due to a hand injury which had resulted from years of working in the workshop. Dan is an exercise enthusiast and attends a local gym to keep fit. He also attended Toastmasters and his involvement in the organisation developed his ability to be a competent public speaker and to chair meetings. After being boarded Dan decided to attend SABS. Although he is not quite sure at this stage, his tentative plans are to return to the Pickering Street, Port Elizabeth, congregation and become involved in the work of the Church there as an independent evangelist, or possibly resume his career as an educator lecturing on technical theory.

  • RAMUDZULI, NTSHENGEDZENI was born in August 1979 in Khakhu, Venda. His family comprises his parents, Piet and Sarah, and siblings Ntsieni and Malokisa. Ntshengedzeni attended the Khakhu Secondary School and obtained his standard 10 (Grade 12) certificate. Soccer and computers are some of Ramudzuli's interests and he also enjoys running to keep fit. Ntshengedzeni played a midfield position in the village soccer team called the "Khakhu Young Chiefs", and he says that the highlights of playing with the team was when they won competitions and were presented with medals for their success. He was convered by Mr Savhasa of the Khakhu Church of Christ in August 1998, and was involved in youth work. Ntshengedzeni intends to return to his home congregation to work as a preacher when he has completed his studies at SABS.

  • HAROLD SIPHO MAJIKE hails from Thokoza on the East Rand and was born in 1980. Harold's parents are William and Lucy, and he is the youngest of 4 children Nicholas, Monki and Gerald. He was educated at the Landulwazi Compehensive School in Thokoza where he obtained his Grade 12 certificate in life skills. This tall young man played basketball and even coached the school basketball team, as well as participating in the English debating group. Harold lists cricket, rugby, soccer and, of course, basketball among his interests as well as reading poetry and writing his own poems, as well as songs with words and musical accompaniment. Harold was converted in January 1999. Prior to attending SABS Harold had worked in the congregation with the youth and also did some preaching. He would love to travel through the rest of Africa, and write more music, and maybe even be a presenter on radio or television. Harold intends to study to become a sound engineer after completing his studies at SABS.

  • ALBERT EDWARD STREVER (EDDIE) was born in Benoni in 1950. Eddie attended Tom Newby Primary School and then went on to matriculate from Benoni Commercial High School (now Wordsworth High School), and in his matric year was a member of the Junior Benoni Town Council. Upon leaving school Eddie did his two years compulsory army training and was stationed at the Heidelberg Gymnasium becoming lead trumpeter of the military band. The band toured extensively through South Africa, and it was through this experience that Eddie developed his love for classical music. Eddie has two children a son, Craig, who recently emigrated to Canada with his wife, Michelle, and their daughter, Alicia, and a daughter Lauren. Eddie was converted and baptized by Les Massey in 1976 and became actively involved in church work. He was employed in the Banking Sector, initially working as a teller, then as a foreign exchange dealer, and was chief foreign exchange dealer when, after 25 years, he took early retirement. Eddie then became a restauranteur for a few of years, running his own establishment in central Johannesburg. He currently lives on a SABS property with his dad (Albert) and mother (Molly) and is involved in the activities of the Benoni congregation and SABS, assisting with maintenance and upkeep of the grounds. Eddie lists among his interests rugby, cricket, braai, classical music, cooking, growing garlic and generally working outdoors. Although he is not sure at this point what his plans will be after he leaves SABS, he is very enthusiastic about studying God's Word.
