SABSLETTER - September-October [1998]LECTURESHIP FEEDBACKFrom Renee and Tony Sofianos, South Coast Congregation: "Dear SABS: You've done it again! Made nonsense of the saying, `If you've seen and done it once, you've seen and done it all'. While the name SABS Lectureship is familiar to us all, the content this year was just as refreshing and stimulating as in previous years. Not only were the keynote addresses superb, but the lectures, too, added a new understanding of the Lord's purpose in our lives. We are returning home refreshed and strengthened, determined to serve the Lord in the best way we can as a result of what we have seen and heard. We thank you for your commitment to excellence. Thank you for another wonderful experience".

REPORT-BACK FROM "REAL LIFE TEAM"The "Real Life Team" led by Jerry Hogg spent the weekend of October 9-11 in Empangeni and Richard's Bay where they worked with the youth. The team consisted of Sherman McLaren, Kennedy Mukuka, Amos Netshitungulu, Jon Grottis, Choolwe Malundu, Annerine Maritz, and Natasha Kotze. The team expresses its appreciation for the warm reception from these two congregations and for their loving hospitality. Jerry Hogg reports: "The students were excellent. I have never been more proud of anyone than what I was this weekend. It was as if they were my children. The congregation was very impressed as well. It was hard to leave there. The students did not want to come home. The members of the church stood outside and they all waved good-bye as we drove away. They had come out to the van and we formed a circle and held hands while Daryl ('91) prayed a very touching prayer. We have some great students!".
NEWS ABOUT GRADS AND EXES:

THANK YOU, SOUTH COAST!The congregation at the South Coast sent R140 to SABS in memory of George Kruger and Joe Seiderer. JERRY HOGG HERE!SABS is really blessed these four months (August 1 through November 30) to have Jerry Hogg on the teaching staff. A former missionary to South Africa for 12 years, Jerry teaches the subjects of Bible Archeology, Pastoral Epistles, the Book of Corinthians, and Preacher's Life and Works. The only regret is that his wife, Ann, works full-time and could not accompany him to Africa. It is hoped she can come with him next time. Both Ann and Jerry are appreciated for their sacrificial spirit represented by Jerry's having to come alone to teach the Word. DIRECTOR OVERSEASAl Horne, SABS Director, is to accompany his wife overseas in November and will be representing and raising money for the Bible School while Donna cares for her parents. After a recent stroke, her mother was admitted to Camlu Nursing Home in Kerrville while her father, an Alzheimer's patient, remains at Edgewater Nursing Center in the same town. The director will be back in Benoni in time for the new school year in January. His e-mail address in the States... GETTING TO KNOW SABS STUDENTSKEVIN HOGG, 29, is the third New Zealander to enrol at SABS. He is the third of four children. His brothers are Peter James and Lawrence Paul and he has a younger sister, Bernadette Mary. In his hometown of Auckland, he attended Dela Tolle College. School sports participated in were soccer, rugby, and touch rugby. In fact, he placed third in a local indoor soccer tournament. He also enjoys hockey, whitewater rafting, and skydiving which he's done on three different occasions. In addition, he has mountain biked down Mount Tarawera which is an extinct volcano. He was employed for four years as a laboratory technician testing chemical and food products for Grayson Laboratories as well as Rohm & Haas. A serious young man, Kevin was converted by John Staiger, New Zealand minister, in October of 1987 and considers South Auckland to be his home congregation. Since then he has served as a Sunday School teacher, song-leader, and fill-in preacher. He has also organized a camp for singles and counselled and taught at a teen camp for ten years before leaving his native shores to enrol at SABS. Little did he know that in South Africa he would meet the love of his life and be married to her seven months later! Kevin and Colette, eldest daughter of Theo Rappard ('88), held both their wedding and reception at the SABS campus on August 8. They are a well-matched young couple as they are both truly committed to the Lord's church. Kevin has in mind studying further at a Christian University in America after which they will return to New Zealand to preach. SABS has high expectations for Kevin and Colette as they focus on spreading the Word in New Zealand. SABS MINI-BANQUET UPDATEThe annual SABS Mini-Banquet to honour graduating students was held on October 17, 1998. The theme was "Higher Ground". After a wonderful meal prepared by SABS chef, Denize Smith, Sam Wishart delivered a farewell to the graduates. Anne Baartman's solo of "Friends Forever" and Donna Horne's awarding of the PHT ("Putting Hubby Through") Degrees to the graduating wives concluded that part of the banquet. The rest of the program consisted of spiritual songs in the Tonga, Venda, Ndebele, Timbuka, Shona, Zulu, Sotho, Afrikaans, Bisa, Bimba and Korean languages. Finally, light entertainment featured a saxophone solo by former professional musician, Mihail Dorogokouplia; faculty imitations by the students; and skits by Jerry Hogg and the Hornes, the girls' dorm, the third-year class. A good time was had by all! SABS CALENDAR
