LECTURESHIP 2000

Lectureship is less than three short months away! The dates are September 24-27 (Sunday morning-Wednesday evening). The theme is "Amazing Grace". Make your plans now to attend!

KEEPING UP WITH THE JONES

Celia and Stuart Jones of Lubbock, Texas, will be living at and working with SABC for two months from August 16th-Oct. 14th. Stuart will be teaching the following courses: "Science and Scripture" and "The Gospel of John". Celia will be teaching the ladies' classes on Monday and Wednesday evenings: "Writings and Wisdom Literature" with emphasis on application. SABC has had a long-time association with the Jones. Not only were they vocational missionaries in Cape Town for over a decade but the Jones' three daughters [Dana, Melanie and Virginia] attended SABC. They are a fine family and Stuart and Celia are devoting their retirement years to serving the Lord full-time.

SABC FAMILY FUN DAY FEEDBACK

A successful fund-raising event was held at the school on May 6th with special thanks to Denize Smith, SABC chef and Benoni Christian, who organized the annual event and to the many brethren and congregations who supported it. Special thanks to the ladies of Benoni congregation as well as the following congregations -- Turffontein, Boksburg, Alberton, and Randburg (Johan Botha). Without the help and support from all of you, SABC' Family Fun Day would not have been the success it was. Thank you, one and all!

MEET OUR FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS

CHRISTIAAN "CHRIS" NAUDE, 49, was born in Lindley in the Free State. He attended Tom Naude Technical College in Pietersburg and at the age of 16 did his apprenticeship. Passing his trade test at Olifantsfontein, he was fully qualified at 19 years old! The following year he worked on a drilling rig at private estates on the border of Kruger Park. Moving to Durban, he worked 6 years as a mechanic for Natal Motor Industries. Finally, he began a 20-year career as a Mercedes Benz mechanic for Stegens Garage in Vryheid, eventually becoming their workshop manager. Mechanically, Chris is multi-talented and meticulous and this trait carries over into other areas as well. He loves chess and is a philatelist. He is married to Kathline ("Cathy") and they have two children, Annalee who is married and lives at Hillcrest in Durban, and Christiaan. They also have two grandchildren. The Naudes married in Durban, and have lived in Empangeni, Mtubatuba, Pietersburg, Newcastle, and Vryheid. Along the way they were taught the gospel by Hans and Lottie Theunissen and were baptised by Gordon Uys ('69) in 1971. Born in Durban, Cathy was educated at Sedhavan, an Adventist school, in Heidelberg. She eventually went back to school at Tech in Vryheid and obtained her matric at the age of 35 a real achievement! For 15 years she was manageress for Redgwood Holdings, a clothing company in Vryheid. Kathy has had three heart operations as well as other serious health problems, but is well now and excited over serving as one of the librarians at SABC. Tremendously talented in knitting and sewing, she is an asset in that line as well. Chris himself speaks Zulu well and in fact, once supported a correspondence course for 500 students which he translated into Zulu. Near Vryheid, he erected a pre-fab building to teach Sunday School to a hundred or so children. In that town he also volunteered as a social worker and was chosen as chairman, counselling problem homes and marriages. Chris has also done prison work but his favourite line of work was missionary work in KwaZulu Natal. In fact, he bought his own sound system and electrical generator and reports he has already baptized around two hundred. He's also enjoyed his work among fledgling rural congregations. His plans are to continue evangelizing in areas where the church is not strong or has not yet been established. He and Cathy are a good team as both are willing workers and have a heart to go out fully for the Lord.

GERALD SIPHO MABASO, 31, was born in Soweto, Johannesburg. The first-born, he has a 23-year-old sister, Nonhlanhla (meaning "lucky"). He was converted by George Funk (' 91) and baptised in February, '99. He considers the Downtown Church of Christ in Johannesburg to be his home congregation. Sipho has a gentle and humble Christian spirit as evidenced by the fact that he used to help clean the church building. He has also been active in assisting with World Bible School teaching and the sale of Christian literature. Sipho matriculated from Kingsgate High School in Lesotho. He passed his Marketing Management N4, serving an apprenticeship with MTD Management Consultancy. He also earned a Certificate of Achievement from Gauteng Bible School in September, 1999. Sipho enjoys reading, basketball, tennis and collecting African art. He also loves community service, having volunteered as a marshall at Khayalami Motor Racing Track and freely gave a year of administration work to Soweto's Chamber of Commerce. In summing up his future ambitions, Sipho says he would like to teach theology in a Bible College or preach in a local congregation. In his own words, "I would like to be complete by being like-minded and being in the same spirit and purpose to know more about Christ". Sipho is already useful to the Lord. It was his initiative to start a new congregation that has begun meeting on Sunday afternoons at a new housing development called Chief Luthuli Park, just down the street from SABC. Already there are a dozen or so meeting together and during the week, they do door-to-door evangelism and enroll Correspondence Bible School students. Siopho goes home weekends to Soweto and as a result of his teaching, has already baptised fifteen! He also baptised his father, John, this year who is now a member of the Dube congregation in Soweto. The name Sipho means "gift" he was rightly named in that he is always giving of himself to the work of the Lord.

DEON RUSSELL POHORILLE, 29, has followed his brother, Wayne's example in becoming a SABC student. They are the sons of a leading lady in the Benoni church, Judy. Their father, Sidney, lives in Australia.. Deon is married to Debbie and their family consists of three young girls: Bianca, 14; Kimberly 13; and Cassandra, 3. Born into a Jewish family, Deon was converted in 1998 by Dr. Des Stumpf. His home congregation is Bellville in the Cape. Schools attended include Benoni High, Sameti (South African Metal Industries) and Damelin. After graduating, he completed a basic training course at the Police College and worked with their Internal Stability Unit. He also obtained a diploma in "Fitness Instruction" from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1989 while acting as sports instructor at The Ridge School in Johannesburg. As a qualified plumber and builder, he became project manager for the construction of shopping centres and apartments in Cape Town. For the past ten years, he has run his own construction business. It is significant that Deon is a builder by trade and a builder in the Lord's church as well. He teaches classes in homes a couple of times a week in addition to his own studies at the College. Exhuberant and dynamic, he has a love for souls and ultimately wants to serve a congregation or mission. He is currently overseeing building alterations and re-roofing projects on some of the older SABC' structures. His wife assists at Benoni Christian School. This family has great potential in the Kingdom.
