Sabs Welcomes Fred Bergh

Fred Bergh of Pretoria is the newest addition to the SABC staff. With the experience and expertise he has gained in working for the South African government all these years, Fred will be invaluable to the Bible College. Having obtained degrees in Political Science & Law from the University of South Africa, he began his career in the Department of Justice. Then he was approached to work in the Office of the Prime Minister where he became the political and legal advisor to a former Prime Minister. Later he worked in the office of the President. He also served as a South African ambassador in New York for four and a half years. Returning from overseas, Fred was put in charge of the United Nations desk. More importantly, Fred has served many years as an elder in the church and in January, he began work as the pulpit minister in Pretoria. He is married to Alfreda, a dedicated and talented Christian woman, who comes from the Kruger family who are long-time members of the Lord's church. They have two children: Marcel, 23, and Lizanne, 20. At present, Fred will be serving as the Registrar and is being groomed to serve as the future director. Director Al Horne says, "SABC looks forward to a long and happy relationship with this fine family."

Introducing First-Year Students:

Chimwemwe Ndawala, 24, was born in Lilongwe, Malawi, with Chewa as his home language. His parents, Alice and Watson, have seven children of whom Chimwemwe is the first-born. He attended Chibothi Full Primary School and William Murray Secondary School where he earned both Junior and Senior Certificates of Education. He was a member of the Maths Club and was also involved in chess, hockey, and jogging. His other interests are music, basketball, and weight-lifting. Chimwemwe's home congregation is Mponela. He was baptized on New Year's Day in 1987 by Leonard Somante and has served as a Sunday School teacher. At one time he was employed for two years by Greenworld Properties where he did the work of a pathologist, checking diseases and pests on crops. Perhaps this is what put the idea of becoming a doctor in Chimwemwe's mind as he wants to become a self-supported preacher.

Isaac Manyike, 25, lives at Daveyton in Benoni. He was born in Pretoria to Tsonga parents, Esther and Philemon, who were baptised last August. Isaac was the second oldest of five children. He and his wife, Dora, have three children: Jamaliel (6), Eric (3), and 2-month-old Innocentia. He was educated at Lusizo Primary School, Abel Motsoane Combined School, and Kgadime Matsepe Secondary School.where he matriculated in 1997. He enjoys playing soccer, volleyball, cricket, rugby and basketball and also loves music. Companies who have employed him are Johnson Tiles, Rufaro Bakery and Nestle SA. Baptized on August 7th of last year by Leonard Somanje, Isaac has helped with the preaching and work of the Etwatwa congregation. That experience combined with the fact that during school he was judged the best speaker in debate, results in a talent that can be used mightily by the Lord. Isaac is convinced of the effectiveness of radio and TV media when it comes to proclamation of the gospel, so it may be that the Lord will lead him some day to that ministry.

Maartin van der Walt, 42, along with his wife, Lynn, is a full-time student from Plettenberg Bay. Maartin grew up in the church and is a third-generation Christian, having been baptised by Basil van As ('75) at Turffontein in 1973. After his school years, Maartin worked in different capacities (from technical carpenter to site, general and contracts foreman) for the following firms: South African Railways & Harbors, Marcro Roof & Ceiling Creators, Pilot Construction, X-tend-A- Home, Goldstein Housing, and Fairlet Construction. At one time he was self-employed with T/A Handy Van Construction. His employment over the years took him from Johannesburg, Welkom, Pietermaritzburg, Margate, and Sedgefield to Plettenberg Bay. No wonder he is such a multi-talented worker! As for hobbies, Maartin enjoys woodwork, table tennis, swimming, cycling, and roadwork. (jogging). In fact, he has run three Comrade's Marathons! Music, of course, remains at the top of his interests. Blessed with a good voice and singing ability, he excels at congregational song-leading and now has in mind to serve the Lord full-time upon completion of SABC. Lynn meanwhile is the perfect help-meet for Maartin. She loves crafts, catering, decorating, cooking and entertaining. She is a real homebody as spoken about in Titus 2:3-4. Also, with her bubbly and friendly nature, she perfectly compliments Maartin's gentle and quiet demeanor. They have a son, Daniel, 13. He completes the van der Walt family who is a tribute to the South African church and to SABC.
