SABCLETTER - JANUARY-MARCH 2008
2008 SCHOOL YEAR
The new school year got off to a good start when SABC opened its doors
again this year for registration and orientation classes. Then followed
the official opening day for the new school year, January 25th. There
are some faculty changes this year. Zechariah Mbewe is no longer
teaching at SABC. He has returned to Zambia. Sherman Mclaren, SABC grad,
is now teaching a course at the Bible College.
THANK YOU, JUNE DAVIES
Thank you, June, for your magic touch to the SABC blossoming flower
gardens. Adding to the expertise of Rona Menage and Kathy Wishart,
you have given an extra dimension of beauty. SABC cannot thank you
enough for all the hard work and expense you have gone to in your
voluntary work on the SABC campus.
IN SWEET MEMORY
Gayle Baird, a recent visitor from America to the SABC campus,
placed a commemorative plaque in the SABC rose garden to honour
the late mother of Donna Horne. On behalf of herself and her
husband, Tom, of Kerrville, Texas, Gayle had chosen these words
for the plaque -- "In Sweet Memory of Winnie Whitaker - Our
Yellow Rose of Texas, 2007". The plaque, flanked by a yellow
rose bush (in honour of Donna's mom) and a red rose bush (in
honour of Donna's deceased dad), the plaque is visible from the
main walkway connecting the library and the main building. A
little ceramic bird marks the spot! Many thanks to the Bairds
who donated this loving and lasting memory to Donna's mother,
who sacrificially gave her daughter over to mission work in
Africa for half a century.
IN LOVING SYMPATHY
Chris Savides, SABC grad, succumbed to cancer after a long
battle on March 30 in Pinetown, Kwazulu-Natal. He and his wife,
Carol, were SABC students as well as their son, Matthew a few
years go. Both Chris and his identical twin brother, Dave
(Richards' Bay minister) attended SABC and were members of the
Benoni congregation for that period of time. SABC extends its
loving condolences to Carol and the family in their sorrow.
Brian van der Spuy, long-time faithful soldier of the cross and
Welkom minister as well as former member of the SABC Board of
Trustees, passed away in a Bloemfontein hospital on April 1st
after a long bout of cardiovascular disease. To Shirley and her
family in South Africa and abroad, SABC sends heartfelt love and
sympathy.
LECTURESHIP 2008 IN THE PLANNING
The 2008 SABC Lectureship is scheduled for Sunday, 28 September through
Thursday, October 2. Those dates were especially selected because all
nine provinces will have their school recess during
that period. The theme is "Spreading the Flame", emphasizing missions,
evangelism, and training. So far, definite visitors from afar are Bev
and Bill Watkins, minister of
Crieve Hall congregation in Nashville, Tennessee, and one of their
elders, Galyon Northcutt. Bill Bryant of the
Wooddale congregation in Knoxville
is also a definite.

NEWS OF TSUMEB BIBLE ACADEMY
A letter from Martie and John D'alton, SABC grad, in Namibia
announces the dedication of their new school building in April.
Their invitation to this important event states, "We feel that the
establishment of the work here is a continuation of the SABS
influence". The D'altons have already obtained confirmation from
their Minister of Home Affairs to inaugurate the facility and are
expecting a number of guests from America. In conjunction with the
official opening, they are planning a Lectureship (April 6-9).
Every Wednesday evening at 6 PM, there is an evangelistic class with a
dozen or so student nurses from the Nursing College on Cloverdene Road.
From this number have already come three recent baptisms. Teachers are
Strive Chikwanda (3rd-year student), Lawrence Ramano (third-year
student) and Nemrod Mamabolo, SABC prinitng staff assistant. SABC
commends these three for their initiative in finding interested souls
and so faithfully treaching and leading them to Christ.
THANK YOU, JOHAN GERBER
For the first time, new students from Zimbabwe have had to provide proof
of medical insurance to get a student visa for SABC. To meet this
expense, Johan Gerber, son of Malan (SABC grad and Kraaifontein, Cape,
minister) took it upon himself to raise sufficient funding from European
congregations. Johan lives in the Hague in the Netherlands. Well done,
Johan! You are much appreciated both by the College and the
beneficiaries (the Zim students).
GETTING TO KNOW OUR FIRST YEARS:
FRANK MATENDA, 27, is a Zimbabwean who was born in Chinhoyi
in Mashonaland. His father, Felix (an investigator for National
Parks) and his stepmother, Maud, are members of the Church of Christ
as well as one set of grandparents. Frank has an extended family
which includes: identical twins Clapton and Chaplin (30-years-old),
Grant (24), and three other siblings added by his stepmother. Frank
is a Shona though his father traces his own roots back to South
Africa. Frank speaks both Shona and English., He graduated from
Marondera's Rakodzi High School in 1997. His favorite sports are
basketball and cricket and he has had two job experiences: 1) He
made spaghetti for Pastaman in Harare for nearly two years and 2) he
was a logo design consultant for Xealos in Harare. Frank has just
graduated from Swaziland's African Christian College with a diploma
in Advanced Biblical Studies. While there he also successfully
completed a course in Microsoft Office 97. Baptised by Morgan
Mutandagayi in August of 1999, Frank has a lot of potential. He came
to SABC with this recommendation from Elliot, a deacon at Manzini's
Fairview Church of Christ: "This young man has the Christian
qualities required of a teacher/preacher. A truly dynamic speaker
and Bible student." When asked his future plans upon finishing SABC,
Frank stated, "Bible School was never in my plans but God had a hand
in it. God had an opening. My life wasn't going that good but I was
helping with the youth at Jubilee Street Church of Christ. Someone
saw the effort I was putting into it and suggested that if I had
more training, I would be even more useful". As it turned out, that
person who saw the potential in Frank and encouraged him to enroll
at SABC was Lenard Magayo, SABC grad. Frank said that he has already
grown and matured since coming to Benoni to the Bible College. Easy
to talk to, Frank is friendly with a good sense of humor. We can
already see a great future for him in the Lord's church.
MELISSA "MISSY" LAMBERT, 18, was born in Springs. When
she was two, she moved with her family to Umtata where she has
lived ever since. She is the youngest daughter of Jean, SABC
grad, and Donald Lambert. Both her siblings are exes from SABC
-- Ben, 23, and Laura, 21. Melissa's long-term plans are to
attend Freed-Hardeman College in
Tennessee from August. Her special friend is Simon Summers
and her hero is her dad, so it comes as no surprise that he was
the one chosen to baptize her in September of 2004. Melissa
began her schooling at Transkei Primary and matriculated at
Umtata High. Her school activities were many: She was a prefect
in Grade 7 and in matric. She was also a member of RCL
(Representative Council of Learners) and served as their
Vice-President. She was on the Debate Team and loves public
speaking so she was Spokesman for her class. Sports included
hockey, athletics, squash (she was #3 for Border), and
gymnastics (Border's #2). Swimming, however, is Melissa's
favorite. She not only swam for the Wahoo Club, but also swam
for South Africa two years ago.. Excelling in long-distance
swimming, the greatest distance she has swam is 5Km. She has
also swam the Midmar Mile (1.6 Km) twice. A talented young
lady, Melissa plays the piano and is learning the guitar. She
also speaks three languages -- English, Afrikaans and some
Xhosa. At university, she wants to study either law or biokinetics. As for travel, Melissa has been to America every
two years since she was 6 years old. She has also done
sightseeing in London and Holland. With her Christian heritage
and upbringing in the Lord's church, we are confident that
Melissa will continue her spiritual journey right on to heaven!
CAROL LAKAY is okay! Encouraged by Benedict Little,
SABC graduate and Central minister in Goodwood, Cape Town,
to come to SABC this year, she declares, "I am very happy at
SABC and so very blessed to be here!" Carol is from
beautiful Stellenbosch outside Cape Town where her parents
still live. She grew up in a family of seven children and is
the eldest of three brothers and three sisters. Schools she
attended include Ida's Valley Primary School and Luckhoff
Senior Secondary School in Cape Town from which she
matriculated. She then did a secretarial course at Ttodd's
and a Commercial Business Course at Boland College in
Stellenbosch. Carol also completed an Accounting Course in
Clairemont, Cape Town, which resulted in her working in the
accounts department for a group of motor companies for
several years. Next she was employed in the accounts
department (SACCO -
Savings & Credit Cooperative) at
UWC (University Western
Cape). Her job previously to coming to SABC was once
again in accounts for a group of automobile repair
companies. Carol is a mother of two -- Robin, 21, and
Zaydene, 24. She has a granddaughter, Jordan (3 years old)
and a grandson, Shuiab (1). Her hobbies are candle-making
and jewelry-making with beads. Baptised in Cape Town by SABC
graduate, Felician Kakama, Carol is the only member of the
church of Christ in her family. Attractive and with a
very engaging personality, Carol smiles, "I love people!".
Which is a good thing because here at SABC, we love Carol
too!
