"Where Time Stands Still"

If you were crude and wanted to deliver an insult, you might say, "You have a face that could stop a clock!" Now if you wanted to say the same thing diplomatically, you could say, "When I look at you, time stands still!"  Have you ever wished that time would literally stand still? Well, at least, slow down a bit. Aren't you flabbergasted by how quickly this year has flown by? It's almost 2008! The count down has begun. In no time at all, it will be 2009! Ha! Gotcha!

Isaac Watts wrote the familiar words, "Time like an ever-rolling stream, bears all its sons away--they fly forgotten as a dream, dies at the opening day." Time is fleeting. Time and tide wait for no one. Just think, today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday!  No doubt, this is why the Apostle Paul cautioned, "Be very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise, but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil," Ephesians 5:15-16. Making the most of every opportunity in the original language means "redeeming the time" or "buying up the opportunities." We would say "make the most of your time, don't waste it." Time is the most perishable of all commodities. Don't waste it. Use it or lose it. The minutes we fail to use never come around again. Jesus said, "What thou doest, do quickly."

Wouldn't it be great if, at times, we could push a digital red button and time would miraculously "stand still" until we pushed the green button. There are magic moments that we wish would never end. Now, of course when we are bored to bits or when we are extremely exhausted, time creeps. We think when will this be over. That's when we long for the passage in the King James Version, "And it came to pass." By and large, life is too fascinating to be boring. Only the unimaginative fall into boredom--creative people explore the caverns of their minds at unavoidable deadly moments.

The Readers' Digest editors have just brought out a new music CD entitled, "Where Time Stands Still." They appear to selling the idea that certain old songs are evergreen. They included Rosemary Clooney's rendition of "You Make Me Feel So Young" and Dick Haymes singing "Till The End of Time." Aren't those memorable tunes? But they seem to have missed it. They should have had songs like "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" or "There's a Land That Is Fairer Than Day" under that title. You see there is only one place where time stands still--that is our eternal home in the heavens. The Bible says, "The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light and the Lamb is its lamp." Revelation 21:23. There will be no night there, Revelation 22:4. "Won't It Be Wonderful There?"

Yes, there is a place where the clock will no longer be ticking. No alarm clocks will harass us. No one will need to punch the time clock. But, in the meantime while here where time marches on, use the precious moments we have with each other wisely. Life is a one-way street. We are not coming back.  We close with the familiar words, "We shall sing on that beautiful shore the melodious songs of the blest; and our spirits will sorrow no more--not a sigh for the blessing of rest." Let's keep our eyes on Jesus!

Love you all,

Al-"The Horne of Africa."
