Benoni Bulletin--220707--"Who's the Boss?"

"WHO'S THE BOSS?"

Do you remember the TV sitcom, "Who's the Boss?" It featured Tony Danza as the "man-servant" working for an up-market lady executive. With his improvising as the "butler, chef and chauffeur" for a somewhat demanding female-boss, humor was the order of the day. Of course, many people in our Western civilization have difficulty identifying just who is the boss. As a result, power struggles are not uncommon in both the work place and on the domestic scene. Even in ecclesiastical circles. I read an account this week that typically illustrates this. A new psychiatrist began a therapy session with an emotionally disturbed patient in a State hospital. "Since this is the first time I am seeing you, " the doctor said, "could I ask you to start at the beginning please?" "Okay," the patient responded, "In the beginning I created the heavens and the earth." He was suffering from the "I AM God-syndrome." You might smile at the patient's blasphemous audacity, but there are many people who "wrestle with God" for control of their lives. As soon as Eve thought she would be "as wise as (like) God", Genesis 3:5, she yielded to temptation. She never dreamed that we only have one master and that is not ourselves.

Our biggest problems seem to come from interpersonal relationships. Egotism drives us to want to be heard and considered first. We want our way and we want our say. If one casts an inferiority complex into the mix, it makes for a truly disruptive situation. One person was heard to say, "After me, you can be first!" Paul disagrees, "Subject yourselves to one another out of reverence for Christ," Ephesians 5:21. Who asks us to do that? Why, Christ, of course. He is the only Lord and Master. He is the Boss.
In Romans 12:10, we are told, "Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves."

The name of the game is submission. We are told to submit ourselves to the governing authorities who have been "rubber stamped" (permitted) by God, Romans 13:1. I always marvel at the stupidity of a would-be criminal who tries to outrun the police in a car-chase. With all the means and fire-power at the disposal of the police, what could be dumber than that? Two elderly, darling retired-ladies announced that they were planning to visit the Big Apple. Folks warned them that New York city was a dangerous place for sweet, little old ladies. It was with some fear and trepidation that they decided to risk it. They were traveling in the hotel elevator when a huge, muscle-bulging athlete and his Doberman entered the elevator. The ladies were overcome with imaginary fears. And when the gentle giant barked the command, "Sit!" both ladies immediately sat down on the floor. I wonder if the dog was amused at such instant obedience! I imagine the trained canine himself had a ring-side seat at the "sit....com." Those ladies were pretty meek and mild. "If you think that meekness is weakness, try being meek for a week." It means self-discipline and being in control even in trying circumstances. It also means that you see there's a greater power who controls the universe.

When Herod began to believe that he was "God" because of pretentious praise over his speech, the Lord struck him down so that lowly worms could make a meal of him. It is never wise to think more highly of ourselves that we ought to think, Romans 12:4. Yes, there are many bosses about. We have to obey our parents, Ephesians 6:1-4. We have to obey our teachers, Hebrews 13:7, 17. We have to obey our employers, Ephesians 6:5. We have to obey the government, Romans 13. Yes, we have many bosses, but only ONE has complete dominion over us and that is God through Jesus Christ our Lord! Now you know and I know who's the boss! Wise people act accordingly.

Love you all,
Al ("The Horne of Africa")
