"WONDER OF WONDERS"

If I were to ask you to submit your list of the seven "wonders" of the modern world, what would you include? Recently, the  world was challenged to make a list of the modern "Seven Wonders of the World." The internet (New7Wonders) activated the vote. Associated Press reports that over 100 million votes were cast on the internet and in cellphone text messages. It is well known that there are some really spectacular sights in our world created by the ingenuity of man. Those that made the cut into the modern hall of fame were The Great Wall of China, Rome's Colosseum, India's Taj Mahal, Peru's Machu  Picchu, Brazil's Statue of Christ the Redeemer, Mexico's Chichen Ita pyramid and Jordan's Petra.

Quite a list, isn't it? What's the matter? Haven't they ever heard of America's Statute of Liberty, France's Eiffel Tower, Russia's Kremlin or Greece's Acropolis among others? Remarkably, physicists tell us that the Eiffel Tower expands to about 6 to 10 inches higher in hot weather. It is also reported that the Egyptians were pretty miffed that the Pyramids of Giza were ignored at first. Of course, political correctness prevailed and the pyramids were readily included as a given. The report stated that the Egyptian pyramids are only the surviving structures of the ancient world's wonders.

A young student didn't hesitate to answer a test question which asked for a list of the seven wonders of the world. And I must admit, his was a pretty astute list. He wrote: (1) Sight, ability to see the colors; (2) Hearing, not living a soundless existence; (3) Sense of Smell, ability to soak up the fragrances and aromas of life; (4) Taste, appreciation for the great culinary flavors of life; (5) Touch, the ability to handle and hold; (6) The Brain, the incomparable human computer and (7) Good health. See what I mean? If you could choose either the former or the latter list of seven, which one would you choose?  Paul makes use of many human body parts in 1 Corinthians 12:14-26 to illustrate the diversified roles we play in the body of Christ (the Church).

But do you know what is even greater than all that magnificent human creativity of the seven wonders whether ancient or modern? Salvation in Christ Jesus! That is the wonder of wonders! That will never be topped by anything ancient or modern. In fact, it is not a transient or temporary phenomenon--it lasts into eternity. His riches are unsearchable, Ephesians 3:8. His love surpasses knowledge, Ephesians 3:19. His peace transcends all understanding, Philippians 4:7. His appeal is universal, Matthew 28:18-20. He reaches out to all of us. "Why should he love me so?"  we cry. That, too, is beyond comprehension. But, the fact that He does is the most amazing wonder of them all. Savor it! Value it! Receive it! Just obey His incomparable will. Let Him in when he knocks on the door of your heart.

Love you all,

Al - "The Horne of Africa"
