Benoni CofC Bulletin--051108--What is a Mother?

MOM, YOU ARE THE GREATEST!

While the father is the head of the home (Ephesians 6:4), we all recognize that the mother is the hub of the home. Proverbs 31:28-31 states, "Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:  Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all. . .Give her the reward she has earned and let her works bring her praise at the city gate."
In wishing all our mothers a "Happy Mother's Day" today, let us use this borrowed tribute to honor every mother with us today.

WHAT IS A MOTHER?

Mothers come in all assorted sizes and temperaments--she's timid enough to faint at the sight of a mouse but will battle the world when her child needs help. She's young and old and in between; she's short and tall and rich and poor. She's a big smile with love in the middle and has two eyes filled with pride. She's the hope of the world with love in her heart.

She is pining for a daughter if she has sons, and pining for a son if she has daughters -- and mothers of both feel luckiest of all! She is the most talented and useful of all living people. She can rock, change, cuddle, coax, kiss, and burp babies.

She is a philosopher with a cake in the oven and a good-will ambassador making oatmeal in the mornings. She is a jar of freshly baked cookies, a wave of the hand as the school bus disappears down the street, and she'd rather have a grubby dandelion given by the loving hand of her 8-year-old than a basket of orchids presented by a stranger.

She is America's hardest "working girl" and is a tired sigh standing over a sink filled with dirty dishes. She can take leftovers from the fridge and blend them into a banquet fit for a king.

She can keep father happy, attend PTA meetings, volunteer for church work, and push tons of spinach through the lips of a young baby.

She can give sympathy and try to see both sides of every argument, even those with Dad! She soothes hurt feelings and sings lullabies and bandages up playground wounds, and worries about the budget.

She likes to look pretty for other people, cries at weddings, and both proudly and sadly watches her sons and daughters graduate from school and university. She gives her sons to their country to fight wars, furnishes players for football teams and batters for baseball...and husbands for other women and wives for other men.

She holds back a tear when she fits her daughter into her wedding dress, holds back another tear when she sees her son start off to college, and holds back yet another tear when any of her children are honored (but not really, for then she just goes ahead and cries out of sheer joy!)

She has the courage that brings gentleness to nations, she gives roots to the family, she gives warmth to the world, and she's the future in a pretty dress.

She's God's greatest invention--she's a godly mother!"

Mothers, as the Book of Proverbs asks, "Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is above rubies". Mothers and grandmothers, we salute you!!

Love you,
Al--The Horne of Africa.
